ESRC

Neil Pollock has finally heard that his latest ESRC application was successful. The project 'Ranking the Rankers: The New Industry of Influencer Relations' will study the new body of ‘influencer relations’ expertise that has emerged in recent years to help organisations respond to the urgent challenge of powerful rankings. Through conducting ethnographic research and integrating insights from Science and Technology Studies with Management and Information System scholarship, Neil and is co-investigators will investigate the development, practices and technologies of these specialists as they attempt to manage and wield influence over global indices. Well done Neil!

CIMA

We are delighted to announce that CIMA are sponsoring Ingrid Jeacle's conference “Managing Popular Culture”. Despite the significance of popular culture in contemporary society, we know relatively little about the role of accounting/accountants in managing popular culture organisations. The purpose of this event is to further our understanding of how accounting connects with popular phenomenon through a combination of research led and practitioner presentations. Academic papers from the event will be published in a special issue of the journal Management Accounting Research. Accounting practitioners in the field of popular culture, for example, financial controllers of sporting, music and consumer organisations will also be invited to attend. The plan is to have a key note speaker from the popular culture industry.

CHSS Mid-Career Fellowship

Well done to Maria Boutchkova who was awarded one of the first College Mid-Career Fellowships. This is an internally supported Fellowship focussed on providing mid-career academics, over the course of 2015, the chance to further their research careers in a holistic way, by addressing each of the varied and complex elements now required in research through a combination of time for writing a significant proposal, facilitated development and highly personalised individual provision drawing on expertise from some of the most experienced colleagues in the University.

Innovation Initiative Grant

Many congratulations to Ben Marder, who has obtained a £5000 Innovation Initiative Grant from The University of Edinburgh Development Trust for an experimental study examining whether changes in self-awareness caused by engagement with social technologies affect 1) general consumption behaviour and 2) success of different forms of charitable donation campaigns.
