ESRC Future of the Armed Forces
After a long wait, Wendy Loretto has received confirmation that her ESRC/MoD application to the Future of the Armed Forces call has been successful.
Wendy will be working together with Prof Sarah Cunningham-Burley from the University's Centre for Population Health Sciences, and Prof Vince Connelly (Oxford Brooks), to examine how Reservist soldiers negotiate civilian and military lives in the context of family and work.
British Academy Skills Acquisition Award
Dahlia El-Manstrly had a successful application to the BA Skills Acquisition Award. These awards aim to develop and enhance the quantitative skills of early career researchers by enabling them to spend some time with a mentor at a specialist centre in their field.
Dahlia will be working alongside Professor Dhruv Grewal (Babson College) to develop her Meta-Analysis quantitative skills. Planned activities include practical hands-on analysis of empirical findings on online retailing service failure and recovery, and participation at networking events in order to meet other experts in the field. As well as providing service managers and researchers with an improved understanding of the effectiveness of online retailing service failure and recovery strategies by documenting its key antecedents, mediators, moderators, consequences, and by assessing the validity of effects sizes, Dahlia also hopes to transfer her skills through supervising students and supporting colleagues.
Leadership Foundation for Higher Education
Celine Rojon, together with colleagues in the Centre for Business and Coaching Psychology at Heriot-Watt University successfully secured funding from LFHE. The Leadership Foundation is committed to developing and improving the management and leadership skills of existing and future leaders of higher education.
This project will bring together colleagues from the two universities to examine how a leadership coaching application for smartphones can influence the effectiveness of scholars who have recently been appointed to managerial/leadership academic roles, such as leading a study programme or being head of group/department, for the first time.
British Council Travel Grant
Fernando Moreira has received a BC Travel Grant to enable him to travel to Brazil to collaborate with Professor Francisco Lima (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais) and build on their joint research on risk assessment in micro-credit institutions.
The research aims to contribute to the improvement and effectiveness of micro-credit programmes in Brazil and might be an example of success to other countries. A longer-term aim is the development of a network with microcredit organisations in Brazil to contribute to future research.
