The innovative group worked with Edinburgh College of Art student Yivon Cheng and an independent umbrella manufacturer, to bring the EdinBrella to life.
The project is part of Dragons’ Glen, a Scotland-wide challenge pioneered by charity .
Led by MSc students Sarah Zillioux, Agustina Velazquez, Liam Hesketh, Robert Bock, He Chang and Samyuktha Ashok, the team has already raised close to £1,000 for the first production run, through charity bake sales and pre-orders.
The EdinBrella is now available to buy for £30.
Dragon’s Glen challenges aspiring entrepreneurs to pitch ideas that will turn an initial investment of £500 into more than £5,000 profit.
The Edinburgh students are competing with groups from Ernst and Young, Blackadders, Thorntons Law, Skyscanner, and more to win the Dragons’ Glen prize while raising money for charity along the way.
EdinBrella project leader and MSc International Business and Emerging Markets student Sarah Zillioux, said:
“Edinburgh is a beautiful and truly inspirational city, whatever the weather. What better way to celebrate it than with a high-quality umbrella featuring some of the city’s most iconic sites?
“We’ve been so pleased with the reaction from students and staff from across the university so far. Everyone has been generous in donating not only cash but expertise as well, to help get the project off the ground. Our plan is to build on this momentum and sell as many as possible to reach the £5,000 target by mid-March.”
