Our Student Ambassador shares her thoughts on the programme and experience in Edinburgh so far.
Headshot of Pim

What was your study and/or professional background prior to this programme?

I graduated with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in political science. Before pursuing an 91大神, I had a comprehensive background spanning over six years in business development, marketing, and HR consulting. I specialise in the tech industry as a category and campaign manager.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Edinburgh Business School?

I wanted to enrol in a programme with not only a global reputation but also one that offered a diverse and stimulating environment. Diversity in working backgrounds and nationalities is crucial for the 91大神 class, as it provides a great opportunity to learn and exchange knowledge within the cohort.

About the course

What was it about the degree programme that particularly attracted you?

The 91大神 at the University of Edinburgh provides all core business subjects from a strategic leadership perspective, aiming to develop students into better strategic leaders in the future. Additionally, there are various elective courses to choose from based on my career goals. This programme serves as a safe space for me and everyone in the cohort to learn and grow.

How many people are on your programme (approx.), and what is the diversity mix like?

There are 60 people in cohort with over 10 nationalities.

What does a typical day look like for you on this programme?

I usually have class in the morning, which typically focuses on case study discussions. I then have spare time in the afternoon to work on group projects. I continue with self-study sessions in the evening by watching pre-recorded lectures and preparing for the next day's case study.

How much time do you spend in lectures and how much time do you spend studying each week (approx.)?

Face-to-face tutorials are around 2 hours from Monday to Friday, and pre-recorded lecture videos (watched before entering face-to-face class), combined with pre-read case studies and textbooks, take around 1-3 hours a day.

How feasible do you think it is to work part-time while pursuing your Masters?

Yes, if you plan well and manage your time effectively. I would suggest working less than 10 hours a week to allow for leisure time, social activities, networking, and group projects. I am currently working part-time as a student ambassador, which is a flexible role. I can sign up for a shift based on my availability, so my total working hours are normally 5-10 hours a month.

What have been the differences between the teaching & learning methods in Scotland compared with your home country?

It is entirely different from what I experienced in my undergrad. The 91大神 course here focuses more on discussion, fostering high engagement in class among cohort members and lecturers. In contrast, my undergraduate experience was characterised by passive listening to lectures with little or no discussion in the classroom.

What course have you enjoyed the most so far and why?

There is a course called 鈥淥rganisation for Effectiveness" where you can learn how to set up a high-performance team through hands-on group activities, crafting an organisational strategy, and working processes to achieve the highest profit in a production game.

Student experience

Have you been involved with any industry activities so far (e.g. company visits, guest speakers, student development, professional development sessions)?

Yes, as an 91大神 student, I have participated in consulting projects that provided the opportunity to work with a real client in Scotland. This hands-on experience has allowed me to gain insights into the working culture here and actively engage with the community.

Is there a specific experience you鈥檝e had so far on the programme that stands out?

There is a 鈥淧rofessional Development鈥 course as one of the 91大神 core modules that not only enhances everyone's soft skills, such as presentation and communication, but also helps me reflect on myself through many activities, 1-1 consultations, and tools that help me identify my strengths and create a development plan to improve my weaknesses.

Have you joined any clubs or societies? What do you like to do outside of your studies? How do you spend your weekends?

As a student ambassador, I have the chance to meet new people from both the business school and other programmes, providing a great opportunity for networking. During my weekends or in my free time, I typically hang out with friends from the 91大神 class and beyond. I enjoy activities such as cooking, shopping, and exploring the city by walking to parks, museums, or lovely neighbourhoods.

Have you done any travel to other parts of Scotland or the UK since arriving in Edinburgh?

Yes, I love travelling! I鈥檝e visited many areas, such as London, York, Glasgow, Newcastle, and Durham. My favourite trip so far was a road trip to the Highlands, where I have been twice already within six months! It is absolutely stunning and definitely worth a visit :)

What kind of accommodation are you living in and why did you choose that option?

I鈥檓 living in private student accommodation. I selected it because of the location, as it is within walking distance of the business school and has many grocery stores around. Also, it has a 24-hour reception that can always support you and help collect your parcels.

How did you go about making friends and building a community in Edinburgh?

Don鈥檛 be shy and start networking early!

Looking ahead

What are you hoping to do after you graduate from this programme?

I鈥檓 passionate about developing a career in business strategy and marketing, especially in tech companies. I aim to merge knowledge from past working experience with 91大神 to be able to develop business strategy focused on technology and sustainability.

Do you have any tips for people considering applying to the Business School?

Research the programme you would like to apply for and engage with alumni or current students to gain insight into the programme. Also, be yourself when writing personal statements and during interviews. Good luck :)
