Agustina Velazquez
MSc International Business and Emerging Markets 2018
Marketing Projects Leader/Brand Manager, Philip Morris International
Reflecting on her MSc, Agustina in Buenos Aires tells us that she still relies heavily on the critical thinking skills she was taught while in Edinburgh, and has found her recent involvement in the Marketing Alumni Advisory Group extremely rewarding.
Why did you choose to study at the University of Edinburgh Business School?
I chose the Business School because it was the only university where the MSc in International Business and Emerging Markets course was available with a highly practical approach as part of its curriculum. And needless to say, Edinburgh itself was a big factor in my decision.
Tell us about your career path before and after graduating.
I am a marketer with almost ten years of professional experience. Before graduating, I developed my career specialising in digital marketing at technology companies in Latin America. After graduating, just like I had hoped, I was able to expand my scope of responsibilities within marketing departments in a change of industry.
How did your degree prepare you for your future career?
Thanks to the level of exigence, the multidisciplinary curriculum, the extracurricular activities (such as Dragon's Glen and the Edinburgh Award), and the diverse student cohort, the MSc helped me to gain the skills required to grow my career towards my desired goal. Today, I not only feel equipped to pursue significant changes in my career but my time at the Business School has also prepared me to become a more responsible professional.
What key thing that you learnt at the Business School do you still rely on today?
One key thing that I learnt at the Business School and I heavily rely on today is the critical thinking skills which help me enrich my views of business practices and make better decisions.
What is your proudest work-related achievement to date?
One of my proudest work-related achievements to date has to do with scaling our direct to consumer e-commerce in less than one month since Covid-19 started. I’m proud that my team and I were able to respond fast, with a tremendous competitive advantage and service, and most importantly, responded to customers’ needs during the toughest moments of quarantine.
Tell us about any recent involvement with the Business School and what you have gained from being involved?
My recent involvement in the Marketing Alumni Advisory Group has been extremely rewarding. Not only are we providing insights that can help shape the future for marketing students but I’m getting to know incredibly talented graduates with impressive professional journeys. Great initiative!
If you could offer one piece of advice to current students, what would it be?
I’m a believer in constant learning. I suggest you make the most of your time at the University!
Workload and group work might be overwhelming, but in hindsight, the amount of knowledge and skills you’ll gain is unfathomable.
I’m proud that my team and I were able to respond fast, with a tremendous competitive advantage and service...during the toughest moments of quarantine.
