Roles and Responsibilities

Dissertation Adviser for Postgraduate and Undergraduate students in the Strategy Group.

Background

I have been an academic for over 30 years.  I retired from full-time academia in July 2021, having served for exactly 30 years at Glasgow Caledonian University.  My contribution to GCU was recognised by my appointment as a Professor Emerita in Human Resource Development in the school for Business and Society.  Whilst retired from full-time HE I have maintained my interests in research, doctoral supervision and examinations.  I was awarded my PhD by the University of Glasgow in 2006.  During my service at GCU I was appointed as a Professor in 2006 and also served as a Head of Division from 2002 to 2010.  Given my HR background I contributed to multiple strategic projects and activities for the school and the wider university. I was also awarded Fellowships with the CIPD and HEA, and was recognised for 30 years service to the HR profession.

I am delighted to now work with students and colleagues at the University of Edinburgh.

Research Interests

I have an extensive research background and have published widely across HR, Leadership and Public Sector journals as well as editing several special issues.  In addition to publications I have presented multiple papers at international conferences including IRSPM, BAM, ANZAM, EUROPEAN HRD  CONFERENCE, Academy of HRD and AoM, as well as at professional conferences including the CIPD's Applied Research Conference. I have contributed editorial boards and to the running of academic conferences e.g. I hosted the 10th International Research Symposium in Public Management at GCU in 2006, which saw the formal foundation of the International Research Society in Public Management.

I regard myself as an hybrid-scholar given my interest in the relationship between HRM/D and public services (including voluntary organisations and NGOs).  My main research interests are:

People Security, Insider Threat and HRM (funded and supported by CPNI); HRM in Public Service Organizations (focus on Health & Social Care); Leadership, Engagement, Psychological Capital and Employee Health and Wellbeing in the Global Public Sector; Coaching and Mentoring.
