Why did you choose to study at the University of Edinburgh Business School (UEBS)?

I was keen to develop strategy and leadership skills and UEBS offered what I was looking for.

What was it about the degree programme that particularly attracted you?

The 91´óÉñ provided flexibility with both the topics and the timing of the sessions being particularly attractive to me.

Your career

Can you tell us about your career before and after graduating?

Prior to the 91´óÉñ, I was a director of a large UK forestry company before setting up my own consultancy firm. At the time of my studies, I was working for the Soil Association on the technical side, supporting a global network of forest certification and a chain of custody auditors.

In November 2023 I moved to PEFC International in Geneva, and I am now Head of Standards and Integrity at this leading global forestry certification scheme. I am focussed on further developing the integrity system and data management to improve the way that PEFC can demonstrate its impact in the sustainability sector. There is currently a huge amount of effort to align PEFC standards to the EU Deforestation Regulations (EUDR) whereby full traceability will be required for all forest and tree-based products in the EU from the end of 2024.

How did your degree prepare you for your career?

I was able to develop my change management and digital transformation skills, enabling me to advance my career.

What notable changes has your degree enabled you to make in your professional or personal life?

The 91´óÉñ gave me a more global view, enhanced my digital skills, and facilitated a research-based approach to issues.

What are the changes you have been able to make in your chosen field, of which you are most proud?

I was able to develop a digital transformation pathway at the Soil Association as well as lead and influence change in a matrix management environment.

What key things that you learnt at the Business School do you still rely on today?

A curious mind, debating skills, and a hot house of talented friends.

Course highlights and advice

What are your best memories on the programme?

My fellow students were such an integral part of the experience, as well as the staff and facilities. I also particularly enjoyed the operations management card game and the mentoring opportunities.

What one piece of advice would you give to current students and recent graduates?

Make the most of it and ask lots of questions!
