Vrinda recommends her top apps for students, covering travel, networking, and even laundry. Most of these are not university-specific, so any student can use them.

Study and University Apps

Blackboard (Learn)

Learn is the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) at the University of Edinburgh. You can sign into this app with your university username and get instant notifications for any course announcements directly on your phone.

Outlook (Email and Calendar)

Your University email will be on Outlook. It is handy to have all emails sent to your phone. Outlook also contains your calendar which will have details about your classes and meetings. It forms part of Microsoft's Office 365 suite.

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning allows you to access short courses on various subjects. Helpful if you want to brush up on your skills!

GoConqr

An app that allows you to access learning resources like mind maps, slides, and quizzes, and you can also collaborate with friends and peers. It is perfect for group projects.


Networking

University of Edinburgh Events

This app is perfect if you want to attend events held at the University of Edinburgh. You can also create you own event schedule. This app was also beneficial before I joined the University, as it gave me a checklist of all the things I needed to bring with me.

LinkedIn

At University, you might go to a lot of networking events, and LinkedIn is a great way to build a network.


Everyday Tasks

Circuit (Laundry)

Many University accommodation options use circuit for laundry. You can use their app to pay directly from your phone.

Giffgaff (Mobile Service)

Giffgaff is one of the simplest mobile services to set up, and it is convenient to use. They have loads of goody bag options, and you can track how much data you have used through the app.

Spending Tracker

As a student, it is essential to keep track of your spending, and know where your money is going. This is one of many budgeting apps to choose from that allows you to spend your money wisely.


Food

Too Good to Go

If you are someone who does not like wasting food, you will love this! Selected restaurants sell their leftover food at the end of the day for a low price, so it doesn't go to waste. They sell their leftovers, you get food at low cost, and there is no wasted food! It's a win win win.

Just Eat

Restaurants on this app are open late. Great for those late-night cravings!

Trainline

Useful for checking train times and prices, and booking tickets.

Transport for Edinburgh App

To check bus and tram times and routes in Edinburgh.

M-Tickets

This app allows you to buy tickets for the Edinburgh bus system on your phone.

Railcard

A discount card for frequent train travellers.


Student Discounts

Unidays

It is excellent for discounts; you can also use your student ID at various places to get discounts!
